Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer, born to a Swedish family. He is most famous for his orchestral suite ‘The Planets’. He was born in a regency town house in Cheltenham Spa in 1874. Holst was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School for Boys, before gaining a scholarship with the Royal College of Music in London. Over his lifetime he composed over 200 pieces for opera and ballet.
A bronze statue of him now stands in Imperial Gardens in Cheltenham. The house in Clarence Road, Cheltenham is now a museum dedicated to his life and music. |
